The given course has provided me with access to concise information that powerfully promotes a better understanding of cultural values and beliefs from both the perspectives of a nurse practitioner and a client. The acquired knowledge will help me to implement health assessments and interventions in a comprehensive fashion while delivering culturally congruent care. More specifically, the way in which the nurse perceives oneself is typically reflected in a manner in which he/she communicates with clients. From now on, before analyzing the cultural background of a client or approaching it from a unique perspective, I will tend to address my own ethics, professional skills and knowledge, personal attitudes, and life experiences in a fashion that improves the interaction with and assessments of culturally diverse patients. Additionally, I have learned to be more tolerant of other cultures and accept different perspectives and mindsets. Patients feel more comfortable and are willing to share more information when they feel that no judgments are placed upon them (O’Brien, 2017). The knowledge about cultural competence has helped me to understand that I am capable of acquiring a specialization in acute care nursing. To be more precise, I believe that the use of cultural competence and sensitivity is particularly valuable in acute care settings, when patients come in their most vulnerable state (Jeffreys, 2016). Unfortunately, due to the fast-paced nature of this nursing environment, many health care providers are preoccupied with discovering mechanisms to treat the physical aspect of patient health, disregarding his/her emotional, social, and spiritual well-being (Ellis & Bach, 2015). It is abundantly clear that culture needs to be taken into account even during short-term care in order to ensure patient satisfaction and prompt recovery.
The given course will empower me to continue working as an advanced practice nurse and to commit myself to providing patient-centered and culturally competent care. Importantly, this knowledge has helped me to understand that I have enough competence to implement practices that drive client satisfaction. With this information, I no longer feel underrepresented in patient care, as long as now I can successfully build strong relationships with patients and actively engage in the care process. This course has promoted continuous improvement of my professional skills and knowledge, thereby keeping me continuously engaged. When I had received a critical feedback on my cultural competence, it made me feel more confident, appreciated, and, at the same time, less stressful. This cultural knowledge has empowered me as an advanced practice nurse to deal not only with physical health but also with spiritual and emotional well-being considering cultural and individual differences. In such a way, gaining cultural awareness and sensitivity has contributed to the competent use of integrated and holistic patient care.
In conclusion, it is important to make a general comment on how the knowledge gained from this course affect my care practice. It is worth mentioning that it epitomizes a clear guidance that assists in approaching clients with diverse cultural backgrounds. In clinical practice, it does not only help to establish positive relationships with patients, but also better understand one’s own stereotypes, biases, values, and perceptions. Combined with self-reflection skills, this knowledge promotes open-mindedness, tolerance, and acceptance, which ultimately results in improved outcomes and patient satisfaction.
